Title: Research Associate, Quality Control

Katie Z. Schmidt (B.S., Genetics, UW-Madison) is a Research Associate in the Quality Control Department at Illumina, Inc. in Madison. She works on the method validation team, developing and refining assays for enzymes that are incorporated into Next-Generation Sequencing. Prior to working at Illumina, she conducted research on fungal diseases affecting bats and snakes at the National Wildlife Health Center in the Microbiology Department. This facility allowed her to work hands-on with animals and contribute to various publications pertaining to White-Nose Syndrome and Snake Fungal Disease.

With a strong background in science, she has joined the program in order to gain the legal and business skills necessary to start her own biotechnology business with a focus in the beauty industry. Interest in this unique area of study grew from her professional modeling career and her passionate pursuit of scientific research and development.
