Laptop Recommendations

Here are some basic recommendations for purchasing a new laptop for use in the program.

First, Windows or Apples?

Either computing platform is sufficient, though we would recommend a laptop running the latest Windows OS (Vista or Windows XP is acceptable). This ensures the greatest compatability with various software products.

Macs can run all the Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), but currently there is no version of Microsoft Project available for the Mac. While Microsoft Project is not required, it is a recommended purchase in conjunction with Biotechnology Operations (first year, spring semester).

Recommendations for Buying a New Laptop

You do not need to buy the latest, most expensive laptop to partipate in the program. For instance, a perfectly adequate new Dell laptop with minimum options would cost between $800 and $1,300.

Significant educational discounts for Dell and Apple laptop purchases are available to students through the Campus Tech Store.

Minimum Specifications (updated April 2007)

  • Memory: 1gig RAM recommended, 512MG RAM minimum. Microsoft's Vista OS will perform better with at least 1 gig of memory.

  • Hard drive: 20 gigabyte hard drive minimum.

  • CD/DVD drive: You might consider a CD-RW/DVD-R drive. They are an affordable option that will let you read CD-ROM and DVD disks, as well as burn your own CD's and/or DVD's.

  • Wireless card: Nearly all new laptops today come with built-in wireless capabilities. If your laptop does not have built-in wireless, you should purchase a wireless card for your laptop that goes in the side (PCMCIA) slot. Here are some suggestions for purchasing a wireless card.
