Course Overview

The Business of Biotechnology: Volume I course is designed to give the Masters in Biotechnology students their first exposure to business principles as applied to the operation of biotechnology companies and serve as a foundation for the more advanced business curriculum.

This course will lay the groundwork for students to fully appreciate the challenges inherent in translating scientific discoveries into a successful business.

Upon completing this course students will:

  1. Understand the difference between scientific and commercial success.
     
  2. Appreciate the challenge of selecting and developing new products that will both provide useful products and deliver a positive return on investment.
     
  3. Be able to select and use the appropriate financial tools for evaluating investments and monitoring the financial progress of a company.
     
  4. Integrate what they have learned into an Opportunity Assessment for a candidate technology.
