Goals of the Course

"Business of Biotechnology: Frontiers and Strategies" tackles top-management strategic issues in the biotechnology and life science business environment. Recall the 'hour glass' concept: the first semester course provided a broad, fundamental understanding of business issues and functional disciplines. Then, "Contemporary Challenges and Applications" presented contemporary operational issues in the business of biotechnology. This segment focused on key operational concepts and skills such as financial evaluation, negotiation and organizing activities.

In this final business segment, we return to firm-level strategies. We focus on dealing with uncertainty and knowledge management in fast moving life-science based industries. The emphasis is on potential choices and action by top level managers.

In all areas, the course seeks to help you develop of the following:

  1. Conceptual knowledge about strategy,

  2. Information about specific industry areas and challenges,

  3. The ability to deploy specific managerial tools.

This semester will tackle issues in a broad array of life-science related industries including medical imaging and agricultural products. Assignments will focus on translating your ideas into action plans.
